How the vocal reducer works
How it works
Most mixes place the lead vocal in the center, meaning it is equally loud in the left and right channels. The tool subtracts the right channel from the left. Anything identical in both channels cancels out, and what remains is the side content: sounds panned left or right, and stereo reverb.
The vocal file is the opposite: the left and right channels added together, which keeps everything in the center. It runs in your browser. Your file is not uploaded.
What you get
- Instrumental: the side content, with centered sounds reduced.
- Vocal: the center content, which includes the vocal and any other centered parts.
Both are 16-bit mono WAV files at the original sample rate, level-matched so they do not clip. You can preview each one before downloading. Downloads need a membership.
Good to know
- This is not AI stem separation. It only works on position in the stereo field.
- Bass, kick, snare and anything else in the center are reduced along with the vocal.
- Stereo reverb and doubled vocals panned wide stay in the instrumental.
- The outputs are mono, so the instrumental loses its stereo width.
- It needs a stereo file. Mono files and files with identical channels cannot be processed.
- Files up to 100 MB and 15 minutes.
For separate vocal, drum, bass and other stems, use the stem separator instead.
Questions
- Will this remove vocals completely?
- Usually not. It reduces sounds in the center of the stereo mix. Vocals with stereo reverb, wide doubles or off-center panning remain partly audible.
- Why does the instrumental sound thin?
- The bass, kick and snare are often in the center too, so they are reduced along with the vocal. The output is also mono.
- Does it work on mono files?
- No. It needs a stereo file with different left and right channels. A mono file has no side content to keep.
- Is my audio uploaded?
- No. The processing happens in your browser and the file stays on your device.
